Why you didn’t get the advertised APR for your loan?

Six eggs illustrating why borrowers may not receive the advertised APR

Why can the APR on a short-term loan look extremely high even when the actual cash cost appears much smaller?

APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate. It is a standardised figure designed to help borrowers compare the yearly cost of different credit products. It includes interest and certain compulsory charges, expressed as an annual rate.

Why short-term loan APRs can look so high

APR annualises the cost of borrowing. When a loan lasts only a few weeks or months, the calculation expresses that short borrowing period as though the same cost applied across a full year. That can produce a very large percentage.

This does not mean you will literally repay thousands of pounds for every £100 borrowed. It does mean the credit is expensive when measured on a yearly basis, and the APR should not be ignored.

What should you compare?

Before accepting any loan, compare all of the following:

  • the APR;
  • the amount borrowed;
  • the monthly or scheduled repayment;
  • the repayment term;
  • the total amount repayable;
  • any late-payment or early-settlement terms.

The total amount repayable shows the actual pounds and pence due if the agreement runs as planned. APR remains useful for comparing products, but it should be read alongside the term and total cost rather than in isolation.

Why did I not receive the advertised APR?

A representative APR is not a guaranteed rate for every applicant. Lenders set individual rates using factors such as credit history, income, existing commitments and affordability. Applicants with stronger credit profiles are more likely to receive the lowest advertised rates, while others may be offered a higher APR or different terms.

Check affordability, not just the headline rate

A lower monthly repayment can look attractive, but a longer term may increase the overall amount paid. Use the Budget Calculator to check whether the repayment fits alongside rent, bills and existing credit commitments.

Badger Loans is a credit broker, not a lender. Any offer depends on the lender’s creditworthiness and affordability checks, and approval is never guaranteed.
